Reacting to that viral video | Weekend vlog & adaptive cycling
Last month Tori Hunter, a disabled travel blogger, posted a video of herself being carried off an aircraft in a broken aisle chair. In the video you can see the horror in her eyes. This experience looks terrifying and should not be happening in 2024. Dogs get off the aircrafts safer than disabled people.
💎About me:
I’m Gem, and after my spinal cord injury at the age of 9, ua-cam.com/video/JDX5md1qbd4/v-deo.html my life has taken me on many twists and turns, and finally led me to combine my passions of media and disability advocacy, et voila! Wheelsnoheels was born.
👨‍👩‍👧I live in the UK with Shaun, my Australian husband, Daisy my Daughter. And our fur babies Tink & Bindi. All of whom make an appearance now and again.

    I‘m dealing with really bad rain at the moment where I live for the first time since getting my wheelchair and i‘m scared to go outside because even with my gloves I have basically no grip on my push rims and I can barely slow myself down when i‘m going downhill. Definitely going to get some asap so I can continue going outside 😅

    My story on how representation helped me. As a kid, I was absolutely petrified by the thought of getting into some sort of accident that took away my ability to walk or draw. Losing a limb or being paralyzed with something TV always like to show as such a negative thing, and my anxiety took that and ran with it. That is until one day an individual with a prosthetic leg came in to my children's youth group and showed off her different limbs and talked about what it was like being a prosthetic leg user. That moment I realized that being disabled and needing to use ambulatory devices like a wheelchair, prosthetic, limb, or anything like that didn't mean, my life and art would end. Just that I would have new ways of getting around. As a teenager, my hyper mobile limbs experienced one of their first of many bad injuries. From that point onwards, I became a part-time to full-time Cane wielder and Knee brace wearer. I would do what I can to protect my knees well also trying not to miss you. The ambulatory devices that I had available to me. Some days this was harder than others due to discrimination and people thinking that I couldn't possibly be meeting assistive devices like store, wheelchairs, or even seeds to sit down in because "I was young, too young to be disabled." This would make me super nervous and using any form of assistance that I absolutely needed to be using. But seeing others online telling their stories of being disabled, whether it be blind, cane, wheelchair user, or prosthetic limb helps me feel better about myself and my needs. Now I am wheelchair user finally getting the treatment. I've been so desperately needing and I don't feel scared or upset about this fact. I feel excited that I now can go about my day without calculating how much pain something was going to leave me in afterwards. The pain is still there, but with the combination of the chair and my cane I can keep it at a level that allows me to get the closest I have in a while to comfortable sleep at night while still allowing me to be free to do all the things I haven't been able to.

    Your video clips of protests and the struggle for access were helpful to me as I’m trying to understand more about Disability Pride month. I worked with adults with developmental disabilities back in the 1990’s. At the time, “people first” was the language to use, ie: “He is an artist who uses a wheelchair instead of “The wheelchair bound guy”. The Deaf community did not use this language as I understand it was important to put this disability out there first in order to be clear about communication needs, culture and so much more that I can’t say I completely understand. I’ve found myself on a planning committee for Disability Pride month at work because I wanted to learn something. I’ve been told by disabled people that they are proud of their disability and I did not understand that but want to. Remembering that the ADA was passed in 1990 and that most people think Disability Pride month is a NEW thing is what really hits home for me. I did not know it existed until this year. How do we go beyond increasing awareness and educating the public and workplace about the history of the ADA and simply just celebrate for the sake of being proud of one’s self, period? That seems to be the challenge. Just thinking out loud here to continue learning.

    Question for folks: About a decade ago, I herniated a disk in my lower spine. It ended up pinching the nerve bundle that runs along the spine and down the leg to the point that the nerve was barely visible on an mri. I lived in this state for about 9 months. I lost the ability to straighten my back and then lost the ability to straighten my legs. Standing, let alone walking, was excruciatingly painful. Eventually (after a lot of gaslighting from several "doctors") had surgery to remove the protruding part of the disk. 4 hours of surgery and I was able to walk tall again. The problem leading to my question though is that I have nerve damage from all of that. Fast forward about a decade and I now have a cane because standing still or walking for extended periods makes me hurt in the same areas as when the disk was herniated. However, and here is where my question comes in, sitting for more than 15 minutes also starts to make me hurt. Standing after that is even more painful. The only relief, I have found, is when I lay on my stomach and let gravity straighten my spine back out. In addition, a somewhat recent x-ray says there's some degenerative issues beginning to crop up. My question (I know, finally, right?) is would a wheelchair be a good option given that sitting also causes me pain? Not an easy question to tackle, I know, I apologize for that. I'm simply not sure if I should continue with a cane (currently propped against my bed in easy reach) or if using a wheelchair is a good idea to try out. I'm likely going to be in pain no matter what but I'm sick of crying and feeling helpless thinking about how active I used to be. I appreciate you taking the time to read this and thank you if you decide to give an opinion on my particular matter.

    Have always been a swimmer, when possible I would get out and swim, never had the chance for scuba diving though. I grew up in and out of a wheel chair, my legs work most of the time but can't do much now that I was just a few years ago. It was so cool seeing you swim with the sharks and other fish. When I learned to swim my legs did not work well, I learned how to free dive and stay down sometimes around 2 to 3 minutes before having learned controlled air release and it was fun.

    What political issues are important for disabled people? Is there any party who is more anti-disabled people? Or any party that is more friendly to disabled people?

    • @CherylLime
      @CherylLime Годину тому

      In general more right wing (ie conservatives ) political policies are less friendly towards disabled people because they believe in the free market, lower taxes, and therefore less investment in public services such as health and social care. This goes a long way to explaining the current state of public services in the UK. However it is impossible to know what you are voting for because all political parties just say what they think people want to hear to win votes and then do whatever the hell they like.

    If you have a postal vote, make sure you've received it in good time. And that your local postal service is up to getting it back to the receiving office in time to be counted. Dont forget you can still take it to your local polling station if it arrives too late. Yes, this defeats the purpose of a postal vote, but it means your vote is counted, your voice heard. And you don't need ID to do it either - just hand over your completed and sealed postal vote.

    • @hannahk1306
      @hannahk1306 2 дні тому

      Check the info on your postal vote carefully, as I'm pretty sure that my local election one said that postal votes could be handed into the Council, but *not* a polling station. Might be differences in local policies?

      They need to start doing that round here - the turnout for the last election was 19% (UK, local only). Now, I was happy with the result, but dear GOD I am appalled by that statistic. Everyone moans about the state of local infrastructure, but don't bother to vote??? (That said, once again, my postal vote only got in because I physically took it to the polling station. The returning officers are wondering why they still bother, with how bad the system is. That might account for some of the lacking turnout, but certainly not 71%.)

    • @sarahmacintosh6449
      @sarahmacintosh6449 2 дні тому

      @@CharityAngelSpectrum That's crazy 😳😳😳 If you renounce your right to vote, you also renounce your right to complain. It should work that way, anyway 🤷 I lived in the US for 17 years and it would drive me nuts to see people just not be bothered to vote. Here in Australia you can invalidate your ballot, but that's an active choice. You can't be too lazy to do nothing at all. (There are provisions for illnesses and emergencies etc.) And since covid the eligibility for early voting and postal voting is much wider, thankfully.

    • @CharityAngelSpectrum
      @CharityAngelSpectrum 2 дні тому

      @@sarahmacintosh6449 I suspect some of it is apathy - the whole system is run by people more interested in their own importance than what the job is supposed to be, so why bother? But, my local representatives are all actually *good* politicians, doing it for the right reasons. I'd love for them to be more supported by their constituents. A responding victory doesn't really mean much when you have fewer than 400 votes. I like the idea of being able to spoil your ballot. I haven't taken that option yet, but I'd have been tempted this year but for my MP being a decent bloke. It's just a shame about which party he represents - I want him, but not his boss.
